duck and cover

Let's assume for a minute that the results of Tuesday's election leave half the population unhappy and worried about the future. What will they think when the U.S. Department of Energy's Public Warning Siren System is activated on Wednesday near the Y-12 National Security Complex?

Don't panic. The Oak Ridge sirens are tested on the first Wednesday of every month. Oh by the way, in the event of an actual emergency, go inside and close all your windows and ventilation systems. Unless of course the actual emergency occurs during the test. Then how would you know?

Your post reminded me of something from my childhood. In Long Beach, Calif., on the first Friday of every month at exactly 10:00 a.m., sirens would sound. I don't know why, perhaps it had something to do with the Naval shipyard in Long Beach, which still had a strong presence 30 years ago. Anyway, I was able to hear those sirens miles away where I lived in Cerritos. On one Friday morning while playing golf at Recreation Park in Long Beach, the sirens went off. Standing under one while getting ready to hit a golf ball it scared the - well let's just say I didn't get a par.
